Book of the Week.

My name is Thomas Wright. I’ve been on the run from the Council of Mages for as long as I can remember. You’d have to ask the Council why, because I have a long memory and don’t know what I or my parents did wrong.

I had everything figured out at one point. Then, I broke one of my own rules.  I had drinks and there was this woman – my main rule is no women, connections and entanglements – it makes for a lonely existence. Now I’m running for my life from the world’s foremost assassin.  He is thought to be immortal, which would make killing him a little tougher than I’d hoped.

My nomadic existence has led me to my becoming a prepper. A mage prepper. I can inscribe runes into ordinary objects to give them extraordinary power. I can also see up to five seconds into the future, which comes in handy when you challenge a young rogue alpha werewolf.

That scrape was worth it. Not only was I granted my own accorded pack territory, but rescuing that fairy from the Alpha earned me one of my closest friends. When she’s not spewing pop culture references, there are glitter bombs and snark. Another close friend is the Sheriff, and just thinking about her has me wanting to break my own rules.

Topping my “to do” list, though, are divining the future to stay alive and solving my parents’ murder. Maybe some payback, though the chips are stacked against me.

Mongo takes a trip

In the newest Mongo adventure, Mongo visits a small town in Alabama named Centerville. Centerville was and is a real place although nothing remains of it now. The main road into 'town' is now someone's driveway. While the town is gone the ghost stories remain.

No pictures exist of either the town historically or what is there at present but there are many other Alabama ghost towns. Places such as Arcola, Alabama.
It was an early 1800s settlement that was absorbed by the local plantations. Only the old homes remain.

Cahawba is another lost place. Only the schoolhouse remains sitting among the ruins. It was Alabama's State Capital in 1819.

Fort Gaines isn't exactly a ghost town. It's the site of a Civil War fort complete with cannons, a blacksmith shop, and tunnels to explore.

Riverton is no underwater, only its cemetery remains.

The town that Mongo visits only exists in visual form as fiction but it makes for a good story. Join Mongo on his latest adventure. Check out Lost in Alabama today!

We are Hurricane refugees

Hurricane Michael is the biggest hurricane to hit Florida in years and we, my wife and I, rode it out. We live in Tallahassee, which for a State Capitol, is in the arm pit of Florida. Several hours North the coast in the 'bend' of the panhandle. We are inland. Not on the coast. Many of our friends asked, "how is the hurricane?" Our answer was windy. Winds were clocked at 69 MPH in Tallahassee. Michael was somewhere between a one or a two when it swept past us on its way North at 13 mph.
(you can see my van next to a small tree) The wind broke half the trees in our complex in half. Including the one next to my van. We lost power on Wednesday at 3:45pm. That night the apartment was hot, humid, stuffy, and very still. Darkness ruled the night. Ironic that it was so dark. We seemed to be one of the few apartments with lanterns and battery operated candles. My wife and I lived in Missouri for years. Power outages and heavy snow storms are the norm. Of course we have "camping supplies" on hand.
The next morning we left. Power had not yet been restored and it was going to be a warm day. The construction workers that live near us informed us of what the roads were like. Bad. The main road out of our area was closed but there was a detour and they told us how.

Trees and closed roads were everywhere. Downed powerlines were the norm. Our building managers said it would be at least 5 days before power is restored. So we navigated to the highway and left for points South. Highway 10 and interstate 75 were filled with both first responders and emergency crews. We counted more than forty Fla State Troopers and almost a hundred tree trimmers, electric trucks, and National guard vehicles. Help is and was on the way.

Currently we are in the area known as the Villages just South of Ocala. Power is still not on but we are hoping for the best. Staying out of the way of the workers is the plan at the moment.  For books I'm working on Jack Dalton and planning out the next in the Federal Witch series, Draft of Dragons.
